The Black River of Eve
Jack Connor, an award-winning journalist in New York City, is in a slump. What’s worse, a new-hire gets the promotion Jack thought was his and he’s assigned to cover a backwater story about corporate philanthropy at Whitaker Corporation. He’s attracted to their development consultant, Tara Campbell, a dark-eyed beauty and an expert on the status of women around the world. Cryptic, anonymous notes lead Jack to evidence that Whitaker is using Tara’s project to cover up the company’s involvement with brothels at their mining sites, populated by girls as young as eleven. Tara is sent to the Amazon to launch a women’s project and Jack convinces his editor to let him follow her. There he meets Lua, a mestizo Indian who can speak English. She agrees to show him around the town and Jack comes face-to-face with the hellish reality of women’s slavery. When Whitaker discovers that Jack is in Brazil, they threaten to destroy him. But he’s tormented by a dream that spurs him to get the women’s story out regardless of consequences.
