2009 is the 50th anniversary of Hawaii’s statehood!

This stamp was issued this year to commemorate.

KUT covers footage donation to the James Michener Center for Writers in Austin, TX

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

I was asked to stop by KUT in Austin, TX to talk about my donation to the James Michener Center for Writers.

I was proud to release the last known footage of this well-known writer into the public domain. Michener was magnanimous in his writing style and against prejudice of any form. He is truly one of the greats. Sadly, he passed away before discovering the true history of Hawaii simply because he may not have had access to this suppressed history.

Listen to the KUT piece here, produced by Julie Moody. She and I posed for a photo just after the interview in the KUT studios.

KOOP Radio Interview

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

Popular Austin radio host Khotan Harmon asked me to come on a show called, “Soul Talk.” She gave me two hours notice to prepare for an hour show on “Finding Your Life’s Purpose.” (I’d be interested to know if I actually helped anyone out there find their life’s purpose!)

Listen to the interview here.

Here I am with Khotan Harmon (center) at a fundraiser for Mona Foundation (www.monafoundation.org) to benefit a project for rural women in Indore, India. When I’m not writing novels, I work with Mona Foundation to support education projects around the world in countries like Cambodia, Tanzania, Brazil and Haiti.

Gaellen on WBEX – Ohio

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

My first interview from the islands was with Dan Ramsey of WBEX 1490AM in Chillicothe, Ohio. (The same day he also interviewed mega-selling author, David Baldacci — so I guess I’m in good company!)

(And, for the time being, you can also download the interview here as a podcast.)
You can tell Dan was under the spell of Hawaii. He said he wished he was doing the interview from my living room…I can understand that. Out my window from the island of Molokai, I see coconut trees and the islands of Maui and Lanai in the distance.

(Wait ’til I tell you what I saw in the coconut trees a couple days ago. Watch for some pics coming soon…)
Here’s a little map of the islands, in case you’re not familiar with Molokai. Click the picture to enlarge.

Gaellen Quinn on Indie 103.1 with Q’Orianka Kilcher

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

The Last Aloha will be in stores and on Amazon.com in mid-May.

Here is an interview I did on Indie 103.1 in Los Angeles (rated by Rolling Stone Magazine as the best radio station in the country and hosted by the fabulous DJ, Trina Quinn — OK, she’s my daughter, but she’s still fabulous). With me, is Q’Orianka Kilcher, who stars in the Princess Ka’iulani movie to be released this year. (She also starred as Pocahontas in Terrence Malik’s, The New World, with Colin Ferrell.)

Check out the trailer for the Princess Ka’iulani movie :

If you can see this, then you might need a Flash Player upgrade or you need to install Flash Player if it's missing. Get Flash Player from Adobe.

Q’Orianka’s film is set in the same time period as my novel — the late 19th century during the time of the overthrow of the royal Hawaiians by American missionary descendents. Neither I, nor to my knowledge, the filmmakers, had a plan for our creative efforts to see the light this year — the 50th anniversary of Hawaii’s statehood!
